Joan Jacobsen

Senior Fitness Specialist

Joan Jacobsen is a 58 year old who advocates a fit and healthy lifestyle on her blog, babyboomerway.com. A report from her doctor in 2009 showed that some of her routine blood work was below par and was likely on her way to develop heart disease or Type 2 Diabetes. Her future was compromised if she didn’t change her diet and sedentary habits. Joan designed her own regimen, after reading and doing research by deciding what was best for her. She purchased a Wii Fit system simply because it was trendy at the time, not aware of its potential value. A walking DVD was already in her home collecting dust and not being used. Both of these undertakings proved getting in shape could actually be beneficial and fun at the same time. Her love for the virtual hula-hoop on Wii Fit resulted in purchasing a real one and incorporating it into her activities program. In 14 months Joan lost 60 pounds by exercising as much as 7 days a week initially, and eating healthier by cutting fat in her diet, which was suggested by her physician’s office. Joan’s previous employer was a hospital heath system; she refused to become one of their patients and slowly facilitated her way to become a fit and healthy person. To keep accountable she kept a private journal; after a few months of secrecy her story was featured on thatsfit.com and at that time her website was made available to the public. She is in the best shape of her life thanks to her mindset and lifestyle change. Joan can be seen running in her neighborhood training for her monthly 5k, volunteering at the Y, creating healthy recipes or writing daily posts on her computer.
